I loved when you took us to your favorite Korean BBQ restaurant and taught us how to cook our dinner! I love you, Randy. You bring sunshine to our lives with your beautiful smile sweetheart! 💚
I first met Randy in a job interview, and I thought I had put myself right back into unemployment within one minute of meeting him. Randy was the second person I met that day, and all I knew about him was he was the boss of the team I was trying to join. His first question was a weird one: "name your five favorite and least favorite college football teams." Confused, I told him I only had one favorite team (Stanford) and my three least favorite teams were Cal, USC, and Notre Dame. Until then, I had not realized that Randy's Blackberry laid screen side up on the table (it was 2010... Blackberries were still all the rage). Unaware of the faux pas I had committed, Randy quickly flipped the device over to reveal a large sticker: the leprechaun was staring back practically taunting me. I verbally backpedaled as furiously as I could, trying to salvage what was left of my candidacy. It somehow succeeded - I got the job, worked with Randy for six great years, and made a friend. Much love Randy. Go Irish!
I remember going to a Pitt Notre Dame game with Randy and he was sat next to a somewhat intimidating looking Pitt fan. He took it in good stride with some fun jokes and was friends with the kid and his dad by the end of the game. Very happy I was able to see him cheer on his Irish a couple times (even if they didn’t always win)
Randy being Randy at Angelos!
Randy took a chance on me when he didn't have to, and even in some of his most trying times, he remained selfless in thinking of me and others. I'm forever grateful to him for being a colleague, mentor, and most of all, a great friend.
Randy and I share a love of shooting...didn't matter the weapon. Pistols, rifles and shotguns. I had told Randy when he first moved down here that my youngest daughter could out shoot him. Man has he worked hard on his shotgunning skills! He is a natural but with a ton of practice.
Our pool party at his glorious—totally under-used—house in Malibu a few years ago after a stressful investment conference. He warmly welcomed two of my good friends, and the four of us spent a perfect SoCal afternoon-through to-twilight on his patio, paddling around, celebrating Dev's birthday, joking, laughing, doing cannonballs, drinking out of red solo cups because does he own other ones?, and finally ordering in pizzas. We all got a serious kick out of the prop police car at the bottom of his driveway -- Randy said it would ward off robbers during his long stretches away for work--except maybe the delivery boy, who was like, "what is this place and how can I join?"
Meeting up with Randy and his investor pals at Notre Dame games in LA & Southbend, and then at Cowboys stadium in Dallas where I introduced him to some work friends, and he "seriously geeked out with my fellow analytics nerds." Rolling with Randy — whether at a football game or Midtown hedge fund conference — means everyone's stoked to see you, b/c they're stoked to see Randy. Investment folks think he's a God (accurate) and Fighting Irish fans also think that. He's created hundreds of millions of dollars to support Yale, the Hilton Foundation, and Rainwater Trust--his returns are a total flex. His kelly green Fighting Irish biz-casual pajama pants & mismatched Nike sneakers (also kelly green) don't project the image of "Randy Kim, Esteemed Institutional Chief Investment Officer" as much as "Randy the Kim, hobo and ND subway fan." They're both right.
In October, when I got an email from Randy asking if he could bring his fiancée to the awards dinner I was hosting in Rockefeller Center. YES, OBVIOUSLY! Ange lights you up from the heartcore, and it's a joy to be around. You look at one another with the glowing admiration of happy lovebirds, and discerning smarty-pants grown-ups who think the other person's the eff-ing best. Cheers to love, friendship, and finding your forever-friends. Thanks for being mine,
--Leanna
P.S. Scritch Winnie behind the ears pls
My favorite memory of Randy is pretty much every email I have ever received from him. They always make me smile, sometimes make me <facepalm>, and they were a guaranteed hallmark of his inimitable personality. Randy's presence is unmistakable!
Favorite memory: Downtown Lagos, deep in a crowded hectic market, trying not to get lost or mugged and looking anxiously for Randy who has gone missing. (not the first time) Suddenly we hear "guys, guys!!! I found one!" We turn around to see Randy with his arms around the only other Asian person (who is understandably very startled) in sight.
Randy enjoyed going on outdoor trips into the woods of New England, ready to try new adventures. Notice when paddling a canoe, he had at the ready a squirt gun to repel pirates and torment other paddlers. I smile just thinking about those trips.
I first met Randy shortly after he joined Rainwater Foundation as their new CIO along with his fantastic first hire Aaron Bigbee. He joined a skeet shoot I was hosting and he’s told me this helped spark his passion for shooting. We’ve had the chance to meet back up for skeet shoots a few more times and I can attest to Frosty’s post - he’s become a stellar and dedicated marksman. He also tolerates my subpar shooting skills. We met for lunch soon after that first shoot together and it was quickly clear that Randy was the most brilliant investor I had spent time with - and the least predictable in where the conversation would lead! I tried my best to keep up but also had the best time laughing and enjoying the conversation. One of favorite memories is the time he agreed to meet a GP I had in town for lunch and we spent half the time talking about the market for cattle sperm.
Randy, You brought fun and joy to everything we did. I cherish our trips together around the world.
Traveling the world with Randy is an experience unlike any other. Some were just fun (the pyramids). Some were just funny (convincing him that I had nothing to do with the large bird he found in his suitcase). And some were things only Randy could do (watching him wave at the guards at the Kremlin while he took a photo of the "No Pictures" sign). All were amazing journeys.
Randy made me laugh every single day when we worked together at Hilton Foundation. I was 23 years old and this was my first post-college real world job - hating it was to be expected, making memories and friendships that would last a lifetime was the best unexpected surprise. Randy made everything better, funnier, lighter, happier.
The Geer Family sends our love! It was such a classic Fort Worth moment to bump into you and Winnie at the zoo back in 2021. We hope to see you again soon, buddy!
